Italy also has a plethora of charming and affordable hotels and inns to choose from, so you can definitely find one that fits your budget and suits your needs.

Two more cultural landmarks that you should definitely visit when in Rome are The Vatican and the Piazza Navona. The Vatican is the religious epicenter of Rome, and even if you aren’t a religious person, it’s an incredible piece of culture and architecture to see.

The Piazza Navona is a shopping center and public square that’s close by, and it’s a great way to get a taste of the local side of Rome. 

Pompeii will be your next Rome destination. It’s the site of a historically destructive volcano eruption that took place more than 2,000 years ago. The site is now a protected archaeological excavation site, and there are guided tours offered to take you through the most important historical and cultural sites. 

Lunch at La Pergola

Now that you’re done your exciting day in Rome, it’s time to make your way to Tuscany. Most tourists choose to go by train. It’s a convenient option, as there is a train every half an hour.

Italy Itinerary Day 2 – Tuscany

The second day of your 7-day Italian trip will consist of exploring Tuscany, primarily the areas of Florence and parts of the countryside.

Tuscany is also a very popular tourist destination because of Florence and is geared more toward those who value art, food, and tranquility.

Breakfast at Sant’Eustachio

Your day in Tuscany begins with breakfast at Sant’Eustachio in Rome. This quaint cafe is located near one of Rome’s oldest markets. It’s well-known for its pastries and freshly ground coffee. They also sell coffee beans that you can take home as a great souvenir or as a gift for some coffee lovers back home.

After you finish your breakfast, it’s time to head to Tuscany. Enjoy the three hour drive or cut your travel time in half by taking a train. The train ride is just about an hour and a half.

Sightseeing and Tourist Options

The first thing you should definitely do once you get to Tuscany, specifically Florence, is take a Duomo tour. The Duomo is an architectural work of art. It was constructed nearly 150 years ago using three different types of marble.

Be aware that there is a dress code and a code of conduct for touring the Duomo. Men and women must have their knees and shoulders covered, and everyone must be completely silent during the tour.

Florence is also the home of the famous David statue, created by the famous Renaissance artist Michaelangelo. This marble statue of the biblical figure is regarded as one of the most famous sculptures in the world.

The statue is housed in the Galleria dell’Accademia, an art gallery that showcases the largest collection of Michelangelo’s artistic works in the world.

The last thing you should definitely do while in Tuscany is explore the countryside. It’s a haven for wine connoisseurs and foodies alike, with wine-tasting tours and enchanting restaurants that serve authentic Italian gelato and pizza.

Italy Itinerary Day 3 – Venice

Your third day on our 7 day Italy itinerary will focus on exploring the iconic city of Venice. This city is known for its intricate canal system, with gondolas and bridges being the primary modes of transportation.

There is truly no other city like it in the world, and there are multiple different tourist attractions aside from the canals themselves. You’ll go to Venice for Day 3 of this 7 day itinerary in Italy.

Breakfast at Le Vespe Cafe

While you’re still in Florence and before hopping on the train to Venice, get some sustenance at the Le Vespe Cafè. Named after the iconic Italian-made moped, the Le Vespe Cafè is known for serving some of the most delicious breakfasts in Florence.

Their Americano comes highly recommended, as is their avocado toast and pancakes. It’s a great place to grab a quick but tasty breakfast before catching your train to Venice.

Sightseeing and Tourist Options

As well as methods of transportation, the canal system, bridges, and gondolas in Venice are sightseeing attractions in themselves.

I recommend riding around the city for an hour or so in a gondola – an experience you can book in advance right here. It’s a great way to explore a large amount of the city with ease, and if you pay a little extra, the gondoliers (the people steering the gondolas) might serenade you with some classic Italian tunes.

Venice is also known for having many bridges, but the one you should definitely visit is the Rialto Bridge. This is the oldest bridge in Venice and it stretches across the Grand Canal (think of it like the main road of Venice). Built between 1588 and 1591, this 157 foot long bridge is a popular photo spot.

You should also make sure to take a short trip to some of the surrounding islands. The most popular island to visit is Murano, which is just a short boat ride away from the main islands of the city.

This island is the center of Italy’s glass-blowing industry. The glass blowers even allow tourists to view a demonstration. It’s a great place to pick up a beautiful, handmade glass souvenir.

Lunch at Fiola at Dopolavoro Venezia

This restaurant is located right on the water, but that’s every restaurant in Venice. What makes Fiola at Dopolavoro Venezia special is its 1920s inspired architecture and unique takes on traditional Venetian dishes.

Their most popular dishes are the foie gras alla Venezia glazed with wine and fried vanilla pastry cream served with a light honey drizzle.

Dinner at Club del Doge Restaurant

Taking a gondola ride through the city at night is one of Venice’s most popular nightlife activities. The water reflects the city lights beautifully and it’s a remarkable sight to see.

The center of Venice, known as St. Mark’s Square, is also a very popular nightlife spot. There is a lot to do there both day and night, so make sure you check it out before you leave Venice.

Now it’s time to travel to your next destination, the glamorous city of Milan. If you want to travel in style, go with the Le Frecce high-speed train. This is a fast method of transportation too. It takes about 2 hours and 25 minutes to get from Venice to Milan.

Italy Itinerary Day 4 – Milan

Milan is another very famous Italian city, primarily for being the international epicenter of fashion and the fashion industry. It will be the location of your fourth day on this amazing 7 day Italy trip itinerary.

It’s the perfect place for those interested in the fashion industry and world of high-end clothing, but it also has much more to offer and caters to a variety of interests. That’s why we chose it for Day 4 of our 7 day itinerary Italy.

Breakfast at Grancaffè Quadri

Since you’ll still be in Venice on the morning of your Milan trip, you still have an opportunity to enjoy breakfast at one of the most popular spots in Italy.

The Grancaffè Quadri cafe is known for its delicious coffee and pastries, but it also has one of the most popular views in the world. Regular patrons highly recommend taking your time to enjoy the view while slowly sipping an espresso and enjoying brioche toast with apricot jam.

After breakfast, it’s about a three hour drive from Venice to Milan by car, and about a four hour trip by train.

Sightseeing and Tourist Options

The first thing you should do once you get to Milan is visit the Duomo di Milano, one of the most iconic gothic cathedrals in Italy. Every inch of the cathedral has extremely intricate details, which is why it took almost 600 years to fully complete. There are multiple different tours you can choose from, such as tours that focus on the art and culture of the cathedral or tours that focus on its history. You can also wander around on your own, as long as you’re quiet.

You can’t go to Milan, the fashion capital of Italy, without shopping. Milan is home to one of the most famous shopping centers in the world, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. It has been around since 1877 and has four floors filled with hundreds of stores. The style is very reminiscent of Italian architecture, so it also makes for a fantastic photo opportunity. You could easily wander around this center for hours, picking up some souvenirs along the way.

The last thing you should do while in Milan is visit the Castello Sforzesco, also known as the Sforza Castle. This castle was built in the 13th century for the Lord of Milan at the time, Galeazzo Visconti. The castle has been through a myriad of its own trials and tribulations, such as sieges and destruction. Even through its tumultuous history, the castle is still standing and is rich with history and culture.

Lunch at Il Luogo di Aimo e Nadia

You’re probably going to do plenty of shopping in Milan, so remember to take a break. The perfect place to do that is Il Luogo di Aimo e Nadia. This chic restaurant has been around for almost sixty years and recently won some Michelin stars in 2019. Their dishes are consistently praised for being unique, fresh, and having a modern spin on classic Italian dishes. Their most popular entre is the beef oxtail, which is guaranteed to leave you satisfied.

Dinner at Marea Seafood & Beverage

Marea Seafood & Beverage combines high-quality and high flavor seafood with exclusive cocktails you can’t get anywhere else. Their most popular dishes include their mini-burger buns and fried shrimp.

The mini-burger buns are freshly baked mini buns that are cut in half and topped with sea scallops, truffle shavings, and bacon. It’s not something you would expect from a seafood restaurant, but it’s incredibly tasty. Italy Itinerary Day 5 – Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre is a beach town that’s famous for its brightly colored buildings, and there’s nowhere else in the world with architecture like that.

It’s a great way to take a breath of fresh air, literally and figuratively, outside the cities.

Breakfast at Il Pirata delle Cinque Terre

It’s recommended to get to Cinque Terre as early in the morning as possible. It’s about a three hour trip by car or by train, so you can leave Milan the night before or leave as early as possible in the morning. Whenever you arrive, the best place to start your morning is at Il Pirata delle Cinque Terre.

This quaint cafe is primarily known for their famous cannoli and pana cotta, but they also have plenty of breakfast options and specialty coffees to choose from. But if you want to have a cannoli and pana cotta for breakfast, the staff is more than happy to provide it.

Sightseeing and Tourist Options

The main things you definitely need to do while visiting Cinque Terre include visiting their beaches and going sailing. Cinque Terre is famous around the world for its stunning beaches. The sand is a shimmery white and feels warm underfoot, the water is crystal clear, and the sunsets are pure perfection.

You could easily spend a full day on just one beach, but it’s highly recommended to explore as many as you can.

Recommended Beaches

Beaches such as Monterosso Vecchio Beach are more for relaxation and playing in the sand and water. On the other hand, beaches like Vernazza Beach are unique in that you have to cut through cliffs to get to them. Bouncing from beach to beach is the best way to experience all that Cinque Terre has to offer.

Boat Tours & Sailing Adventures

Sailing is also a great way to experience the beaches and architecture of Cinque Terre. Local ferries offer plenty of boat tours that will take you around all five of the villages. Viewing the villages from the water gives you a whole new view, and makes for some amazing photos.

A Leisurely (and scenic) Walk

If you would like to get a bit closer to the villages, then walking along The Monterosso Footpath is the best way to do so. The path connects the towns of Monterosso and Vernazza, two villages that are on opposite sides of the city. The path takes an hour or two to fully complete and has multiple views of the ocean and the architecture along the way.

Visit the Amazing National Park

The last thing to do while in Cinque Terre is explore the Parco Nazionale Cinque Terre. The national park showcases how amazing the combination of nature and humanity can be. Centuries ago, people carved steps into the cliffs, to act as fields. A one day pass costs nine dollars per person, and the cliffs are fascinating to explore.

Lunch at Agriturismo Missanega

Cinque Terre is famous for its rustic cuisine and fresh seafood, and Agriturismo Missanega combines these qualities to create delicious dishes. Located on a hilltop in Monterosso, this restaurant has quickly become beloved by locals and tourists despite only being open for a few years. They have their own rooftop garden that they incorporate into each of their dishes.

One of their most popular lunch specials is pappardelle (a type of pasta) with leeks, cherry tomato confit, taggiasca olives, and sausage from Pignone (inland province). All of the food is fresh, tasty, and a perfect way to reenergize after walking along The Monterosso Footpath.

Dinner at L’ancora della Tortuga

Also located in Monterosso, L’ancora della Tortuga serves a seven course Italian dinner made with fresh ingredients and authentic Italian spirit.

The restaurant is built inside an old World War II bunker built into the cliffside, so you get an up-close view of the stunning ocean below.

If you prefer to order single dishes, some of their most popular ones are a beef filet with lardo di Colonnata and their spaghettini with anchovies.

The view of the beaches and the city at sunset are fantastic, and the city does look beautiful lit up at night. However, you won’t be able to stay and enjoy Cinque Terre at night for too long. Day 6 in Italy will be spent in Lake Como.

Italy Itinerary Day 6 – Lake Como

The sixth day of your 7 day itinerary in Italy will include a stop at the magical Lake Como. It takes about four hours to get to Lake Como from Cinque Terre by car, but about six hours to get there by train. I recommend that you take the train overnight so you can go to sleep in Cinque Terre and wake up the next morning in Lake Como.

This city in Italy is also known for its beautiful, natural tourist attractions. From hiking to sailing, Lake Como is a natural paradise for all to enjoy. It’s one of the most beautiful destinations in all of Italy.

Breakfast at Gelateria Lariana

Your day in Lake Como will begin with a sweet breakfast at Gelateria Lariana. The small cafe is located on the west side of the lake and serves delicious, ice cream based dishes at a reasonable price. A few of their most popular items include the affogato al cioccolato and the brioche con gelato.

The affogato al cioccolato is hot chocolate mixed with ice cream and whipped cream, while the brioche con gelato is a brioche bun stuffed with an ice cream flavor of your choice. Both of them are a great way to start your day in Lake Como.

Sightseeing and Tourist Options

The most popular things to do in Lake Como are hike, sail, drink wine, and hike some more. The lake is surrounded by mountains and hills that you can hike up. And each one has an amazing view at the top, with some views even showcasing the Swiss Alps.

The hikes vary in difficulty from beginner to experienced, so you will definitely be able to find a hike that suits your abilities and still get to witness a gorgeous view.

Hike Monte San Primo

The most difficult hike is the Monte San Primo, a 4.7-mile round trip trek that takes an average of three and a half hours to complete. The route is moderately steep, but the views at the end are more than worth it. If you prefer an easier hike, then there are plenty of other options to choose from.

Schedule a Boat Tour of Lake Como

Sailing is also a very popular option in Lake Como- the city has “lake” in the name after all. The views around the lake are also gorgeous, and you get an entirely different perspective of the city from a boat. Lake Como offers a wide variety of boat tours, so you’ll definitely be able to find one that’s perfect for you.

Lake Como Wine Tours

Lastly, you can never drink too much wine while in Italy, and Lake Como has some of the best wine tours in Italy. This tour will guide you around a traditional Italian winery and provide some history of how wine was made in ancient Italy. They also let participants sample freshly made wine while enjoying views of the vineyards.

Lunch at Locanda dell’Isola Comacina

The Locanda dell’Isola Comacina sea-side restaurant has been one of the most popular restaurants in Lake Como for almost 60 years. They serve a six-course meal that hasn’t changed much during all that time, and for good reason: it’s delicious!

The meal includes roasted free-range chicken, which is incredibly moist and tasty. After all of the other courses, it finishes off with homemade vanilla ice cream topped with fresh oranges and orange liqueur. Enjoying the meal while gazing at the lakeside views makes this restaurant a must.

Dinner at Ristorante Filo

You’ll find the Ristorante Filo situated right next to the lake. It couples stunning views with equally impressive food. The menu is decided based on what ingredients are currently in season, so you will always be getting the freshest dishes. Furthermore, the restaurant has different menus every day of the week, so you never know what you’re going to get, just that it will be delicious.

Some of their most popular dishes include roasted potato ravioli with mushrooms, chestnuts, and pork, and pasta with lobster, smoked provola cheese, and basil. It’s also recommended to take a few hours after dinner to sip some wine, relax, and enjoy the view of the lake at night. Last but not least, your final day in Italy will be spent in Genoa.

Italy Itinerary Day 7 – Genoa

It takes about three hours to get to Genoa from Lake Como by car, and about four to five hours to get there by train.

Once you arrive, Genoa will welcome you with stunning ports, a bustling cityscape, and endless things to do.

The Piazza De Ferrari

Looking for the perfect location for a memorable photo? Try The Piazza De Ferrari – it has a beautifully ornate, giant fountain in the middle of the square, and is a very popular spot for snapping an iconic photo (and for tossing a lucky coin in).

The Piazza Matteotti

The Piazza Matteotti has the Doges Palace, a very intricate building surrounded by stone columns and other unique architecture. It’s a great spot to get a feel for Genoa and pick up some last-minute souvenirs.

Aquarium & Maritime Museum

The Genoa Aquarium and Maritime museum is a popular attraction that combines the modern and the historical.
